VITICULTURE: Chateau Recougne blanc, Terra Recognita, 1998, is the inaugural vintage of this wine. This wine represents a breakthrough in white winemaking at Milhade. The impetus for the creation of the Cuvee Prestige came from the exceptionally hot August and the perfect ripeness of ou Sauvignon. At Chateau Recougne, there are a few small parcels of high quality Sauvignon Blanc vines. These vines are quite old and so yields are low. We believe that within these small parcels there is an outstanding terroir. All of the grapes were hand picked and quickly transported in small baskets to the winery.

VINIFICATION: Following further sorting and selection at reception, the berries were gently pressed in an airbag press. The press was operated on a very slow speed to avoid extracting any bitter oils from the seeds. Only the free run juice and that of the first pressing was used for Terra Recognita. Following clarification, the juice was fermented and matured in 100% new french oak, with regular battonage to extract fruit and body, and a light filtration. The wine bottled in March 1999 and only 3000 cases were produced.

CHARACTERISTICS: Color : A clear, medium straw showing vibrancy.
Nose : Purity of Sauvignon fruit. Aromatic, intense, fresh lemon/lime flavors and grassy aromas. The new oak is evident yet well integrated.
Palate : dry, medium to full body, fresh acidity, with crisp citrus fruit flavors and of vanilla oak essence. There is great appeal between the richness of fruit and the fresh acidity. Long finish.
Terra Recognita was chosen because the terroir of Chateau Recougne was officially recognized, according to local legend, by Henry IV after he spent a night at the Chateau.
